The last of the three major spring National Hunt Festivals, it’s time for the British runners to do the travelling this time. Five days of top class action at Punchestown from 30th April to 4th May 2019 provide a quality end to the jumps season, with a final opportunity to see the stars of the sport before they go out on their summer breaks. We will have tips and previews for all of the races!
Day one sees the Champion Chase, similar to the Cheltenham equivalent as it’s over the minimum distance of two miles where Un De Sceaux was a fan-favourite winner in 2018. Two other Grade 1’s on the card, both in novice events, make for a stellar opening to the week.
The Punchestown Gold Cup is the feature contest on the Wednesday and we could have a mouthwatering match up between the Wille Mullins pair of Al Boum Photo and Kemboy, Cheltenham Gold Cup and Aintree Bowl winners respectively.
On day three, the stayers take centre stage once again, but this time over hurdles. Won four times by the brilliant Quevega, the Champion Stayers Hurdle is supported by a Grade 1 Novice Chase as well as the La Touche Cup, a Cross Country Chase over four miles and two furlongs.
The Champion Hurdle has been farmed by Willie Mullins in recent times, with the Closutton handler winning seven of the last nine renewals. That race is the highlight on the penultimate day of the festival, along with a Grade 1 over the intermediate trip of two and a half miles for novices.
Saturday, the fifth and final day, has two more Grade 1’s with the Mares Champion Hurdle as well as the Juvenile Hurdle to bid farewell to the jumps!
