‘Watch out for these two’ – Bookies terrified of Byrnes duo’s Plumpton raid 😱

Charles Byrnes can be a tricky customer so it’s always worth noting when he makes a raid on British soil. The rogue trainer sends two over to Plumpton on Monday and his son Phillip takes the rides. It would be wise to watch out for these two who were successful in a similar raid at Sedgefield earlier this season. Both runners have conventionally good chances and shouldn’t be ignored. 1.10 Plumpton

Grozni (8-13, bet365) is an experienced customer over hurdles with 12 starts to his name. He goes in the novices’ hurdle and will be looking to make his experience pay. This horse is no stranger to Britain, having run at Ayr, Market Rasen and Hexham. The horse was victorious in a Market Rasen bumper for Denis Gerard Hogan.

A winner of two hurdle races since switching to the Byrnes yard, both of these have come in handicaps. His form outside of handicaps in Ireland does leave something to be desired but with those wins under his belt now, better is expected. Phillip Byrnes offsets five of the 12lb he’s due to give the field. By no means a strong race, this is a cracking opportunity.

1.40 Plumpton

Wajaaha (4-11, bet365) is being sent a long way for a seller. It has been a long time since we’ve seen him over hurdles but he had some very useful form in 2020. Comfortably won at Leopardstown in March of that year on just his second handicap start, scoring by four lengths. Things got even better from there and he won a Kilbeggan novices’ hurdle by 10 lengths.

A narrow second to N’Golo who was trained by Willie Mullins at the time, at Listowel followed which was also solid form. Despite being comfortably beaten at Grade 3 level next time, he still finished third which is stronger form than anything on offer here. Not so good on the Flat since and the return to hurdles should really suit.
