The legend that is Frankie Dettori does not grace Chester Racecourse too frequently but when he does he certainly means business. These days Dettori struggles to get out of bed unless it’s for a good ride and who could blame him? He has put the hard work in over the years and he now tries to live a content peaceful life. But he also likes to ride winners.
Operating at a 21 per cent strike rate at the racecourse in the last five years, Dettori is travelling all the way to Chester for just two rides on Friday. They combine to form a tasty double that has a realistic chance of winning.
The talented Al Aasy was taken out of this race on Thursday afternoon so that means Megallan must have a big chance in the Group 2 Huxley Stakes. Sporting the famous Golden Horn silks, this son of Kingman finished second to Hurricane Lane in the Dante last year and went on to land the Group 3 Sovereign at Salisbury last August. Entitled to need the run when second to Master Of The Seas on his return to action at Newmarket in April, he probably sets the standard.
Dettori travelled all the way to Chester last year to ride just one horse; this horse, Falcon Eight for Irish raider Dermot Weld. He absolutely bolted up in the manner of a very classy horse, cutting through the pack in the closing stages. He will be 5lb higher in the weights this year but if he recaptures that form then he will be very hard to beat.
