Regarded as the home of flat racing, Newmarket racecourse plays host to some of the best racing Britain has to offer, including the 1000 and 2000 Guineas. With nine Group 1 races each flat season, you’ll want to stick with myracing, as we provide in-depth analysis for all the big races at Flat Racing’s HQ!
Newmarket is the home of flat racing, known as HQ, due to its proximity to so many yards, its early season schedule is typically vital in a connections’ plans. The Craven meeting is Newmarket’s first meeting of the year, where many future stars learn to ply their trade.
The first two classics of the year, the 2000 Guineas and 1000 Guineas, take place here and are considered the pinnacle of the mile divisions for either sex with rich prizes and considerable stud value on offer. With Royal Ascot starting only a few weeks after the Guineas Festival, the weekend presents a huge question of horses looking to emulate the likes of Frankel, Dawn Approach, Gleneagles and Galileo Gold who have done the 2000 Guineas and St James’s Palace Stakes double in recent years.
Another Newmarket staple is the Cambridgeshire meeting, traditionally scheduled to take place in late September. The three day meeting features the 35 runner handicap it’s named after along with a pair of juvenile Group 1’s – The Middle Park and Cheveley Park, with many runners en route to next year’s Guineas.
October sees Newmarket’s season come to a close with their four remaining meetings including Sun Chariot Day and Future Champions Day which are highlighted by three Group 1’s the Sun Chariot Stakes, Fillies’ Mile and the Dewhurst Stakes.
With Newmarket Tips, trends, and analysis for all of the big races and festivals at racing‘s headquarters be sure to check out our expert’s Newmarket Tips throughout the season.

The Rowley Mile is a very wide track with the famous ‘dip’ a couple of furlongs from home. It’s not unusual for horses to struggle on this part of the track so you ideally want a well-balanced horse, or a horse proven to handle the track, both of which are considered in our tips. The Rowley Mile is also home to the longest straight in Britain at one mile and two furlongs, so getting cover, particularly against a strong wind is vital. With its long straight and uphill finish, it’s important to be on a horse that stays the trip well and jockeys will look to save vital energy for the final portion of the contest.
Due to the width and frequent use of the Rowley Mile, the rails are often moved which changes starting positions. As such there is no notable draw bias on the course, but it can pay to watch earlier races for an idea of which part of the track you want to be on, on any given day.
We have tips for all the major festivals which start in April with the Craven Meeting. The Guineas Festival takes place at the end of April/early May with the opening two classics of the season. The Cambridgeshire meeting in September features the 35 runner handicap it’s named after along with a pair of juvenile Group 1’s – The Middle Park and Cheveley Park. The Future Champions Festival in October has both the Fillies Mile and the Dewhurst, both key races for next year’s classic generation.
