IN SUMMARY: There are some well-bred types in this that should go onto good things this year and SCALES OF JUSTICE can start the best of them all. A son of Galileo, he had a lovely introduction to racing last year and he will love the step up in trip today. Ryan Moore is booked and he should be thereabouts in this. Mistress Quickly has a good chance on breeding but she’ll need to improve from her last effort whilst Radjash could be dangerous in first time headgear.

1 BALASHAKH – One of the few runners in this with racecourse experience and he sets the standard off a mark of 74. He’s run with credit in a few starts to date and has been well-backed on virtually all of his runs (6/4, 11/4, 13/8, 6/4) and he’s become a little frustrating. He steps down in trip here and although he has the benefit of race fitness, this looks the strongest test he’s faced to date. Others make more appeal.

2 BREAKING BREAD – Half-brother to Make It Up who won four times over 7 furlongs and achieved an official rating of 111 on his final career start. John Gosden’s runner has a bit more stamina given he’s by Nathaniel and this 1m 2f trip looks like an ideal starting point. Yard have been in good form of late but a couple of their fancied maiden runners have been slightly disappointing. Should give a good account though for a yard with a 21% strike rate here.

3 BRISTOL MISSILE – Cost 145,000 Euros as a yearling and is a son of Kitten’s Joy. Interesting turf runner here given the dirt pedigree but his dam was a decent enough sort on the turf and she progressed the further she went. Yard are in good form but it’s likely she’ll want further than this and others make slightly more appeal today based on pedigree.

4 COMRADE CONRAD – 78,000 Euro purchase as a yearling and he’s by the Guineas winner Canford Cliffs. His dam only raced twice and was beaten a long way on both occasions but her sire was Galileo and that should ensure this runner has enough speed and stamina for today’s 1m 2f trip. One of interest at a bigger price for a yard that do well here (17% strike rate).

5 KEY BID – Stand out runner in this given he was bought for 375,000GNS as a foal. He’s a son of Dubawi but he’s already been gelded which is an unusual move for a horse with such a lofty price tag and possible breeding potential. He has plenty of speed on his dam’s side given she was a winner over 6 furlongs and Godolphin have been flying with their maidens of late. Likely to attract strong support in this.

6 MASTER ARCHER – 85,000 Euro purchase as a yearling and he’s only repaid £241 of that in two runs to date. He was well-beaten over 7 furlongs on debut and progressed only a little in another maiden at Kempton back in December. He’s been gelded since and this extra trip should suit this son of Mastercraftsman although he’s a disappointing performer so far. Yard have sent out just two winners from 31 runners here.

7 PICCOLORO – Once-raced son of Piccolo who was beaten out of sight on his sole start. He finished last of five, beaten 42 lengths and that came just 13 days ago so it’s impossible to forecast a sudden turnaround in form. This is a harder race than his last run at Wolverhampton and the presence of a claimer suggests this runner will be seen to better effects in handicaps.

8 RADJASH – Second runner in this for Charlie Appleby and he sets the standard on form in this. He finished second on debut at Kempton and third of eleven at Doncaster in a turf maiden back in October and he will have learnt a huge amount from those two experiences. There was money about for him on both occasions (6/4, 11/4) and he will attract market support here with the first time cheekpieces applied. Yard have a 19% strike rate here.

9 SCALES OF JUSTICE – Son of Galileo out of an un-raced mare and he’s a half-brother to a Breeders Cup Juvenile Fillies winner in Halfbridled. He was supported in an extended mile contest at Nottingham back in October and he made a nice introduction to racing, finishing midfield. There will be a lot more to come this year and presence of Ryan Moore suggests big things are expected. Respected.

10 MISTRESS QUICKLY – 110,000GNS purchase as a yearling and she’s a half-sister to plenty of winners. She finished fourth in an average maiden at Nottingham last year and there should be more to come this year stepped up in trip as a 3yo. Yard have an excellent 21% strike rate here and Fran Berry takes the ride. Could be well-supported in this to make a winning reappearance as a 3yo.

11 PENNY RED – Comfortably beaten in two weak All-Weather maidens last October and November and she didn’t really progress on either of those starts. She’ll receive a handicap mark after today and Callum Shepherd claims 3lbs off her back which will inevitably help. Best watched today.
