Wednesday’s angles: Fast ground horses to follow at Bath and an Irish Oaks tip
There are six meetings taking place across Britain and Ireland on Wednesday and the heatwave has led to the ground conditions being extremely fast at Bath, so we’ve selected some horses whose records suggests that the ground will be to their liking. and the race of the day is a Listed contest at Killarney Ireland’s fourth Classic of the season takes place on Saturday so we’ve picked out an ante-post selection to consider. Race of the day: Cairn Rouge Stakes
The Listed Cairn Rouge Stakes is open to three-year-old fillies and the leading candidate is impressive Royal Ascot winner Green Carrera. She won the fiercely competitive Sandringham Stakes with plenty in hand and should be up to winning a Listed race of this standard.
Jessica Harrington’s Cromac Quay is lightly raced and she managed to get off the mark in a 7f maiden at Leopardstown last time out. A winning margin of almost 10 lengths suggests she’s entitled to be competitive at this level and the daughter of Night Of Thunder could be anything.
Meriden completed her hat-trick when winning a valuable handicap at the Curragh in good style last time out and it wouldn’t be a surprise if she ends up making the frame. Drop Dead Gorgeous finished third in a Group 3 on her second start and could feature if returning to that sort of form.
Fast ground horses at Bath
Christopher Mason’s Darkened Edge returned to winning ways in a weak event at Chepstow last time out and fast ground brings out the best in her. She won a course and distance handicap on firm ground back in August 2024 and Ryan Kavanagh’s 3lb claim will come in handy.
Blue Hero loves firm ground, having won four times and placed twice on it previously, and he was victorious over course and distance last time out. A regular visitor to Bath, Adrian Wintle’s eight-year-old has won here 10 times before and it would be unwise to rule out another big run.
Irish Oaks tip
No trainer has won the Irish Oaks more times than Aidan O’Brien and Sugar Island could have fallen under the radar here. She was employed as a pacemaker in the Oaks at Epsom and the testing conditions made that very hard work, so the fact that she finished third is a huge compliment. Much quicker ground is anticipated here and that will make it easier for her to provide a stronger finishing effort.
