Trainer with 67% Carlisle win rate sends one runner on a 546-mile round trip there on Saturday

Carlisle Racecourse

It’s the Eclipse at Sandown this Saturday afternoon on ITV Racing but the most interesting angle of the day comes at Carlisle in the evening. In the last five years, Hugo Palmer has sent just nine runners to Carlisle. Remarkably, six have won and two have finished second. Palmer sends a single horse to the track on Saturday night, a 546-mile round trip.

Haydock is the other card live on ITV with Leicester, Beverley and Naas completing the afternoon action. Bellewstown is the other evening meeting along with Carlisle on our horse racing tips on a busy Saturday.

8.50 Carlisle – Watch On Racing TV Maiden Stakes

Adrastus silk

Adrastus is the horse in question, a once raced maiden who was beaten a long way on his debut at Yarmouth. He didn’t help himself with a very slow exit from the stalls that cost him the better part of half of the margin he was beaten. He did well to catch up by the end of the back straight but the damage was done.

Briefly looking a threat between the four and three poles before fading, he clearly has an engine under the bonnet. The winner went on to Royal Ascot to win the Group 2 Queen’s Vase. It’s no surprise then, that the early move in the straight to close up to within a couple of lengths told late on.

An improvement on that looks sure to be forthcoming here, especially if breaking on terms. Given a gelding operation since last seen, his dam was by Galileo out of Ouija Board so being by Dubawi himself, he’s bred to be useful. This stiff track looks fine given the stamina in his pedigree, with Palmer’s record making things all the more interesting.
