Trainer sends sole Monday representative on 536-mile round trip to Newton Abbot

Newton Abbot Racecourse

The week kicks off in style, with six meetings to look forward too on Monday. Dundalk, Newton Abbot, Ayr, Killarney, Lingfield and Wolverhampton all host action and we’ll have horse racing tips for them all.

When a trainer sends their horses on a long journey, it’s never just for the fun of it. Travelling is both costly and time-consuming, so when a trainer sends just one horse on a huge journey, they’re worth more than just a second glance.

Based out of Methwold in Norfolk, Toby Bulgin won’t be a household name. That being said, he sends a sole representative on a huge 536-mile round trip to Newton Abbot on Monday. You can find all the details below about this interesting runner.

On pedigree, there’s plenty of reason to be optimistic about Gerritzen. A son of Geordieland, he’s from the family of Value At Risk and made an encouraging debut at Uttoxeter last month. Undergoing wind surgery and fitted with the tongue-tie prior, he was sent off at 28/1, and finished an 18-length fifth.

The race developed into somewhat of a sprint off the home turn and after travelling well into the race, he was outpaced in the straight. Despite the margin, it was a promising introduction from a horse who will evidently need further in time.

Although he will likely do better in handicaps, this is far from a strong race on paper. Those with experience have run to a very similar level to what he achieved on debut and he wouldn’t need to improve much to land a blow.

Given the fact he had undergone wind surgery and was tongue-tied prior to his debut, he’s likely to leave that debut well behind here. At 33/1, he’s a very interesting each-way candidate and it’s very easy to see him filling the frame.
