Thursday’s racing: Trainer to follow, Balding sends one to Hamilton and an Irish Derby tip

There’s plenty happening on Thursday and the high temperatures have led to the afternoon’s meetings swapping to a morning start. Here are some of the more interesting angles across the cards and they include an Irish raider at Newmarket, the trainer to follow, a long distance traveller at Hamilton and we’ve also selected a lively outsider for Sunday’s Irish Derby at the Curragh too. Take a look at our free tips page for daily content across British and Irish racing.

Appleby turns up the heat in the summer

Charlie Appleby has maintained an excellent strike-rate at Newmarket’s July Course for an extended period of time and he has landed two winners from three runners there so far this season. Godolphin’s main man will be represented by just one runner there on Thursday.

Mysterious Times looked very green when making his debut at Sandown and did well to finish third under the circumstances. That experience won’t be lost on him and the son of Night Of Thunder looks well set to get off the mark on this occasion.

Balding sends one a 780-mile round trip to Hamilton

It’s fair to say that Hamilton isn’t Hampshire-based trainer Andrew Balding’s local track so it’s noteworthy that he’s sending just one runner on the 780-mile round trip.

Ruby Wedding remains lightly raced but we need to see a bit more from her if she’s to get off the mark. The drop in grade may well aid her chances and it’s very likely that the best is yet to come. Her pedigree suggests that the step up to 1m3f is likely to suit but others are preferred.

Irish raider alert

Michael O’Callaghan is sending debutant Jackson Canyon over to Newmarket and leading jockey Rossa Ryan has been booked for the ride. The son of Jack Christopher is out of a 5f winner in the US and was picked up for 90,000 guineas. It’ll be fascinating to see how he gets on.

Irish Derby outsider

Bay Of Brilliance (16/1, Betfred) landed a decent maiden at Goodwood in September and the runner-up won by 15 lengths next time. Bolting up at Redcar after that, he was also a neck behind Maltese Cross in the Lingfield Derby Trial. He got stuck in the mud when tiring late on at Epsom and should be capable of getting a little closer this time around.
