Saturday’s highlights: Sprint Cup preview, outsiders and horses for courses

There’s plenty to look forward to on Saturday afternoon, with seven meetings on offer across Britain and Ireland. The day’s main event is the Group 1 Sprint Cup at Haydock so we’ve previewed the big race. We’ve also selected some potentially overpriced outsiders and and proven course performers to follow. Sprint Cup preview

A field of eight are set to take their chance in this 6f Group 1 contest, after Jim Goldie’s American Affair was withdrawn and Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes winner Almeraq heads the betting. He needs to bounce back after a below-par display in the July Cup but obviously has the ability to compete.

Kind Of Blue was second in this race last year but he has plenty to find on his form so far this term, having been well beaten behind Almeraq at Royal Ascot. Marvelman is probably a 7f specialist and he ran well behind Notable Speech at York last time but needs to improve to win at this level.

Hungerford Stakes winner Coppull was a fair fourth in the July Cup on his penultimate start and is entitled to go close once again. Big Mojo landed this race last season and he got back on track with victory in an Irish Group 3 last time out, which bodes well for another big run here.

Both Paborus and Aramram have something to prove at this level but one horse to consider at a big price is James’s Delight, who was an impressive winner on his only start on heavy ground.

ITV Outsiders

In The Breeze (28/1, bet365) was a comfortable winner over a 1m4f handicap at Thirsk on stable debut and he’s a previous course winner on heavy ground. Don’t rule out a big run from him.

James’s Delight (22/1, bet365) is a fair performer at Group 2 and Group 3 level and the testing conditions won’t be a problem for him. Potentially vulnerable from a win perspective, he could quite easily make the frame however, as some of his rivals will get stuck in the mud.

Horses for courses

Gethin landed a 1m2f Listed contest on his only previous start at the track and that bodes well for a big run. He struggled behind Constitution River in the Eclipse but this race looks much easier and a return to winning ways could be on the cards.

Pole Star has won two of his three starts at Haydock and that includes a valuable course and distance handicap in July 2025. Now down to just a 1lb higher mark, he can make his presence felt.
