Saturday’s highlights: Irish 2000 Guineas, ITV Outsiders and horses for courses

Saturday is going to be a busy one and there’s some top-class action to look forward to across the afternoon. The Curragh hosts Ireland’s first Classic of the season, the Irish 2000 Guineas, so we’ve taken a closer look at the race.

We’ve also picked out some ITV Outsiders to keep an eye on, as well as some horses with proven course records. Check out our free tips page for daily content across British and Irish racing.

Irish 2000 Guineas

A field of 10 has been declared and only four of the runners ran in the English equivalent at Newmarket last time out. Gstaad was runner-up behind Bow Echo at Newmarket and as George Boughey’s colt is absent, he is very much the one to beat. He was eight lengths ahead of Distant Storm that day.

Greenham winner Aparslan appears to have a solid chance and is entitled to improve for his latest run. Thesecretadversary was an impressive winner of a Group 3 last month although he has plenty to find with Gstaad, having finished 12 lengths behind him at Newmarket.

Neolithic and Pacific Avenue look like potential pacemakers for their respective yard’s first string runners and are probably best watched. Joseph O’Brien’s Just Do It is an intriguing outsider and could run into a place, having won his maiden in good style last month.

ITV Outsiders

Spicy Marg (14/1, bet365) ran in the 1000 Guineas on debut and she was a non-stayer over a mile. The drop in trip will suit and she’s also entitled to improve for the run. Michael Bell’s filly won a Listed contest over this trip last season and could outrun her odds.

Elegant Erin (40/1, bet365) has struggled with her mark in her last couple of starts but the handicapper is beginning to relent. A return to form is anticipated sooner rather than later and it would be dangerous to rule her out.

Horses for courses

Alparslan is no stranger to the Curragh, having made the trip over for a valuable sales race at the track last season. Karl Burke’s colt managed to come out on top and that gives him a 100 per cent course record. As long as the ground doesn’t dry up too much, he should be in the mix.

Pole Star has won two of his three starts at Haydock, although both victories have come over shorter trips. The son of Teofilo should go well in the last ITV race of the day.
