Owen Goulding picks two 33-1 shots against the field in the Irish Cesarewitch

After an action-packed day of Saturday racing, Sunday brings the curtain down on the week with four more meetings. The Curragh, Newton Abbot, Limerick and Goodwood also host action and we’ll have horse racing tips for all four, including a NAP of the Day and Lucky 15 tips.

The biggest race of the day is the Irish Cesarewitch, a 30-runner handicap which looks as competitive as ever. Since 2011, there have been just two winning favourites and five winners priced at 10-1 or higher.

There is just a single runner at a single-figure price in this year’s field and unsurprisingly, I’ve found two runners against the field. They’re priced up at 33-1, and you can find all the analysis below!

3.05 Curragh – Powerful Kieran

Trained by the powerful Joseph O’Brien yard, Powerful Kieran doesn’t look like a 33-1 shot to me. Granted, he did take eight starts to get off the mark on the level, but he opened his account at Killarney last time in empathic fashion. Upped to fourteen furlongs, he looked in trouble at the top of the straight, but he surged home and won with a huge amount in hand.

An eleven-pound rise isn’t overly harsh and he’s set to improve further for the step up to two miles. The fitting of the blinkers is another positive, as that’s another potential point of progress, and he’s snuck in at the bottom of the weights. Danny Sheehy removes three pounds from his back and given the form of the yard overall, his huge price confuses me.

3.05 Curragh – Hannon

My second against the field will be the Thomas Gibney-trained Hannon, who is a smart dual purpose performer. He’s rated 140 over timber and that gives him plenty of wiggle room off his current flat rating of 77, on paper.

He returned to the flat at Bellewstown two starts ago, finishing a close second in a 2m 1f handicap. He was eating up the ground as they turned into the straight and only just ran out of time, beaten less than a length. His most recent run came at Down Royal in the Ulster Cesarewitch, where he battled on gamely and was beaten just two lengths after attempting to make all the running.

A return to two miles should prove ideal for him, especially with a strong pace to aim at. Ground conditions are perfect for him and off a rating that is clearly achievable, he’s an obvious player under Leigh Roche.
