Paul Townend has 35% strike-rate at Killarney last five years & rides one on Sunday

Champion jockey Paul Townend has a 35% strike-rate at Killarney in the last five seasons and interestingly only has one ride there on Sunday, despite Willie Mullins having a few runners at the County Kerry venue on the day. Could that be a tip in itself? Let’s take a deeper look below.

4.50 Killarney

Paul Townend’s sole ride of the day is aboard Paggane in the Killarney National Handicap Chase, which has a good pot up for grabs and looks a very competitive contest at first glance. Owned by the Donnelly’s in the famous Al Boum Photo colours, this six-year-old mare has been generally very consistent if not frustrating at times, but this is her handicap chase debut and the handicapper has given her a squeak here off a rating of 137.

A winner on the Flat in France in the summer of 2022, Paggane won just two of her 12 hurdles starts for Willie Mullins, a 2m4f Punchestown maiden and a novice hurdle at Kilbeggan last summer. She already looks a better chaser after four runs in this sphere, runner-up in a Grade 2 at Limerick on her chase debut in December.

After that, Paggane finished third in a Fairyhouse beginners’ before winning an average race of its kind at Clonmel next time over 2m4f on heavy ground. Runner-up to stablemate Fun Fun Fun in a Listed 3m chase at Perth last month, that should put her spot on for this and there’s no reason why she can’t at least hit the frame here. It must be said she is unreliable enough for win purposes though, so some caution is advised.
