Monday’s racing: Promising Mullins bumper runner and long distance travellers at Carlisle

Wille Mullins has some decent chances on opening day.

There are some good angles to consider across Britain and Ireland on Monday, including a promising bumper runner for Willie Mullins and a big name trainer who is sending two runners up to Carlisle from his Hampshire base. We’ve also picked out a beaten Derby horse to keep an eye on and there’s also an interesting trainer stat at Windsor. Take a look at our free tips page for daily content across British and Irish racing.

Look out for this Mullins runner

Linford was an impressive winner of a Killarney bumper on his debut last month and he kicked clear to score by 10 lengths in the end. There was plenty left in the tank that day and a 7lb penalty shouldn’t prevent him from following up here. He looks like one for the tracker.

Richard Spencer is 2/2 at Windsor

Windsor has been a happy hunting ground for trainer Richard Spencer so far this season, as both of his previous runners have come out on top. Motown Filly represents him in the second race on the card, as does £125,000 purchase Starburster in the same race. Cuff It also runs for him later on in the card and he’s entitled to improve from his debut at Newmarket, where he finished fifth.

Don’t give up on this beaten Derby runner

James J Braddock did exceptionally well to stay on as well as he did, having misbehaved more than a little in the preliminaries. Joseph O’Brien won the Oaks on Friday with Thundering On and it looks like this horse is another very exciting three-year-old to go to war with. The penny will drop eventually and when it does, it would be no surprise to see him win a big race at some stage.

Two horses sent on a 618-mile round trip to Carlisle

It’s fair to say that there are tracks much closer to home for Ralph Beckett than Carlisle, so it’s noteworthy that he sends two runners there on Monday. Beckett has a 31 per cent strike-rate at the track in the last five seasons and Pearl has every chance in the fillies’ maiden. Music Academy has a bit to prove but the switch to handicaps can facilitate a significant amount of improvement.
