Monday’s racing: A strong fancy in Naas’ feature, trainer in form and a key stat
A new week kicks off on Monday and we have five meetings to look forward to across Britain and Ireland. There are a few interesting angles to consider and we’ve picked out three that pique our interest. Naas‘ feature race is the valuable Ballyhane Stakes and one runner in particular catches the eye. Trainer Ollie Sangster’s recent form means his runner needs considering and Eve Johnson Houghton runs one at Nottingham. Ballyhane Stakes
There’s a substantial prize fund of €200,000 on offer for this two-year-old race and Ger Lyons’ runner Livenka brings a very good level of form to the table here.
She made her debut in a course and distance maiden back in April and she was unlucky to bump into Aidan O’Brien’s Victorious on that occasion, as she went on to land the Queen Mary Stakes at Royal Ascot. Livenka was third on that occasion and it was a promising performance.
The step up to 7f didn’t suit at the Curragh next time and the impressive winner that day also went on to win a Group race on her next start. Beating a subsequent winner when getting off the mark at Fairyhouse last time out, there should be more to come and she looks like the one to beat.
Eve Johnson Houghton at Nottingham
Nottingham has been a happy hunting ground for Eve Johnson Houghton and she has four winners from six runners here so far this season, giving her a strike-rate of 67 per cent.
Quisana is her sole representative at the track on Monday and she looks more than capable of winning a maiden sooner or later. Second by a narrow margin at Chepstow last time out, a similar effort is likely to put her in the mix once again, so it would be very dangerous to rule the three-year-old out.
Ollie Sangster is in flying form
Wiltshire-based trainer Ollie Sangster is operating at a strike-rate of 44 per cent in the last fortnight and that bodes well for the chances of his only runner on Monday, Queen Sana.
Second in four of her five starts on turf, Queen Sana should be capable of winning a maiden of this stature. She’s potentially running out of chances but she has lots of experience and her form suggests that the three-year-old could be hard to beat, with Danny Tudhope taking the ride.
