Massive gamble alert: 40-1 into 6-1 at Doncaster to start the turf season 😲

Laurens wins the May Hill Stakes at the Doncaster St Leger Festival 2017

The flat season gets underway on the turf at Doncaster with the Brocklesby. With a field of unraced juveniles going to post, it’s always a contest that it’s wise to take a check of the market. The opening contest on ITV Racing has seen one very well backed, opening up at 40-1, he is now into 6/1 at the time of writing which looks a significant move.

Jiffy Boy is the horse in question, a cheap purchase at the sales at only 1,500 guineas but he clearly has been showing the right signs on the gallops at home. His trainer Robyn Brisland said in the Racing Post said “He’s what I call a sharp, early two-year-old…he’s been sharp enough and he won’t disgrace himself.”

His dam was a winner as a two-year-old and is a half-sister to one who landed a Listed contest as a juvenile. That has to make him of interest from a family who have done well at this age. A March foal, he is one of the first born in here which while not of massive importance later in the season, can be a small plus at this stage of the game.

Brisland would not be a natural starting point for many in this type of race. The yard have an 8% strike-rate with two-year olds on turf in the last five years, however, which matches their general level. 3/25 on turf with this age group in 2021 to go with three seconds and four thirds so 40% of their juveniles on turf last season made the first three. That is more than expected for a smaller yard and does make the money more interesting given the stable are well capable when given the ammo.
