John Gosden-trained Derby gamble picks up pace ahead of Sunday return

Boitron winning the Denford Stakes at Newbury under Silvestre De Sousa

There has been an interesting move for a John Gosden runner in the Derby during the week. That race comes up on the 5th of June but with the 2021 seasonal debut of the horse in question coming at Newbury on Sunday, punters have been getting on all week. 50/1 was available in multiple places at the start of the week, the best at time of writing is 33/1 with Betfred with 25/1 the general price.

That doesn’t tell the whole story as Hills and Paddy Power cut the price this morning having only done so on Thursday. We will have tips for the ITV Racing on Newbury’s card tomorrow as well as the Scottish National meeting at Ayr. A busy Sunday for our free horse racing tips will also feature Wincanton, Stratford, Dundalk and Tramore.

1.00 Newbury – Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships Maiden Stakes

Darab is the John Gosden horse in question, a hot favourite to make a winning return on Sunday. A half-brother to Enable, he garnered plenty of attention for his Ascot debut last season when finishing second. He looked like being a massive improver on that effort over seven furlongs, put away for the remainder of the year as he is sure to make a better three-year-old.

The winner that day was La Barossa who would win a Group 3 a couple of weeks later and made a smart reappearance in the Craven when runner-up. A repeat of that should be more than enough to land a maiden like this and there should be plenty more to come when stepped up in trip.

Gosden is not one to rush this type, giving Enable just a single run as a juvenile, bringing her back on her three-year-old debut at this same track. He looks set for a crack at the Dante at York in May after this and then up in trip again potentially for the Derby in June. If he wins on Sunday, that 33/1 will be a distant memory.
