Our tipsters' strongest bets for this meeting

Raymond Wilcox Memorial Mares' Handicap Hurdle (Class 5)
Hiupinthesky silk

Mares only for this two mile five and a half furlong handicap hurdle and the obvious pick is hat-trick seeking Lady Longshot but she steps up in trip after winning her last two at Fontwell and Newton Abbot and has been off track since last June. She can go well fresh but has to give three pounds to HUPINTHESKY who looks an interesting import from the point to point field, with This Lovely Lady the sort who should improve for her recent wind operation.

14:45 Novices' Chase (Class 4)
Jenkins silk

Just the five runners for this two and a half mile Novice Chase and what looks on paper to be a two horse race. Secret Investor looks a major player for Paul Nicholls, and it would be no surprise to see a flawless round at last after intensive schooling. So far he has made mistakes over fences and another would open the door to Nicky Henderson’s JENKINS who won his first start over fences at Stratford before a length fourth at Cheltenham and a length and three-quarter third at the same track. He has to carry a winner’s penalty today but should lap up the drop in class.

South West Racing Club Handicap Chase (Class 3)
King Calvin silk

King Calvin

Not quite as easy as it looks at first glance and a chance is taken on KING CALVIN who was far better over hurdles than his chasing mark and looks as if he will learn with experience. Dropped back to a far more suitable trip at last he can give his best here at an each way price and may prove too good for Pointed And Sharp who is also expected to show some serious improvement for the in form Hobbs yard.

SJH Carpets Handicap Chase (Class 5)
Findusatgorcombe silk

A huge age range for this three and a quarter mile handicap chase with top-weight How’s My Friend looking for win number five on his thirtieth start over fences at the veteran age of fourteen. He looks up against it here with the likes of FINDUSATGORCOMBE who is half his age in opposition and a winner last time out at Wincanton, staying on strongly over a fraction shorter. He could well follow up here with Lizzie Langton his biggest danger.

Not So Sleepy silk

Not So Sleepy

Some pretty decent novices will do battle here with the Paul Nicholls trained Miranda the main danger if there is one to NOT SO SLEEPY who was pretty decent on the flat and looked as if he was beginning to translate that to hurdles when making all to win here last time out. He would be odds on at these weights on the flat and could be thrown in off this mark over hurdles, making him the one to be on in this field in a race well worth watching.

Put in a solid performance when winning over C&D three weeks ago & with more improvement expected should have enough quality to overcome a penalty.

Tips for Wincanton Races

Located in the east of Somerset, there are plenty of trainers based near Wincanton so a lot of the racing is competitive and of good quality. The likes of Paul Nicholls send plenty of horses and it’s not unusual to see rising stars appear at the track.

Course: A sharp, flat right-handed oval of about a mile and a half. The fences can be quite demanding and three come quite quickly after the home straight so our tips need to be confident jumpers. Also due to the tracks sharp nature it’s not unusual to see plenty of races won from the front, so we often look for prominent racers for our tips.

Feature Races: Wincanton plays host to three Grade 2 races throughout the season with the Elite Hurdle, Rising Stars Novices’ Chase and most notably the Kingwell Hurdle. The latter takes place in February and is recognised as a Champion Hurdle trial. The Badger Ales Trophy is a staying handicap in November, worth over £34,000 to the winner in 2018. The race was upgraded to Listed status in 2003.
