Our tipsters' strongest bets for this meeting

CRS & Palfinger UK Handicap Hurdle (Class 3)

Hititi could hardly have been more impressive when winning by 12 lengths at Exeter last time out. He was always travelling strongly and put the race to bed fairly quickly. The handicapper has responded by hitting him with a 9lb rise but if he turns up here in the same sort of form, that wouldn’t stop him. Harry Kimber is a useful conditional and he takes 3lb off which will only help his cause.

Calgary Tiger

Analysis
7/4

The switch to fences has completely transformed Calgary Tiger. This gelding had shown very little in his four starts over hurdles but he’s unbeaten in two starts over the larger obstacles. It was a monstrous performance to win on chase debut over course and distance last month, as that was his first start for 712 days. Improvement was evident at Newbury last time, when he made a mockery of a seemingly competitive race. Despite being hit with a 10lb rise, there should be more to come.

15:00
CRS & Westexe Veterans' Handicap Chase (Class 4)

Pemberley probably found the going a bit too quick for him when running poorly in his last two starts on good ground. There’s a touch of soft in the description here which could inspire a return to form. He finished second in a better race than this at Lingfield in November and he looks dangerous here off a 10lb lower mark.

CRS & IBMG Handicap Hurdle (Class 4)
Western General silk

Western General

Analysis
5/2

This looks like a competitive event with no fewer than four last time out winners in the six-runner field. Joe Tizzard’s gelding is completely unexposed, having had just three starts over hurdles so far. It was a brilliant effort when second by a length to subsequent winner Killaloan on handicap debut last time out. He should improve for the experience and looks well capable of getting off the mark in this sort of race.

Tips for Wincanton Races

Located in the east of Somerset, there are plenty of trainers based near Wincanton so a lot of the racing is competitive and of good quality. The likes of Paul Nicholls send plenty of horses and it’s not unusual to see rising stars appear at the track.

Course: A sharp, flat right-handed oval of about a mile and a half. The fences can be quite demanding and three come quite quickly after the home straight so our tips need to be confident jumpers. Also due to the tracks sharp nature it’s not unusual to see plenty of races won from the front, so we often look for prominent racers for our tips.

Feature Races: Wincanton plays host to three Grade 2 races throughout the season with the Elite Hurdle, Rising Stars Novices’ Chase and most notably the Kingwell Hurdle. The latter takes place in February and is recognised as a Champion Hurdle trial. The Badger Ales Trophy is a staying handicap in November, worth over £34,000 to the winner in 2018. The race was upgraded to Listed status in 2003.
