Friday’s racing: Race of the day, soft ground horses at Haydock and a 25/1 outsider

Gifted Master wins the Stewards Cup

We’ve got six meetings to look forward to on Friday and the best of the action comes from Haydock and Goodwood. The latter hosts the Listed Festival Stakes and our stat of the day relates to a jockey riding at the Sussex track. Soft ground horses should come to the fore in testing conditions at Haydock and we’ve also picked out an outsider who looks capable of outrunning her odds. Take a look at our free tips page for daily content across British and Irish racing.

Race of the day

Goodwood’s Festival Stakes is arguably the better of the day’s two Listed contests and a field of nine has been declared. Royal Ascot winner Haatem will be popular in the betting. Boiling Point has performed with credit in Group 3 company and is entitled to go close with that in mind.

Roger Varian’s Enfjaar has some solid placed form at this sort of level but is probably one to oppose. Ice Max gets the nod from us however, as Karl Burke’s runner was third behind Lambourn in the Group 2 Huxley Stakes last time out.

Jockey stat to note

Edward Greatrex has a 67 per cent strike-rate at Goodwood so far this season, with two winners from his three rides, and he will be on board Venetia in the 3.42. Ralph Beckett’s improving filly scored on handicap debut last time out and there should be loads more to come.

Outsider of the day

Figjam (25/1, bet365) would be much shorter if she hailed from a bigger yard and she was a valiant second in a heavy ground Listed contest at Doncaster in October. Too keen when fading into seventh in a 7f Group 3 last time out, the drop back in trip will help and she should improve for the run.

Soft ground winners at Haydock

The going at Haydock is currently described as soft, heavy in places and those with proven records in testing ground will have an advantage. Lady Youmzain bolted up in soft ground on debut at Pontefract last term and the unbeaten filly should give a good account of herself in Listed company.

Bellasio has a very consistent record on turf and his sole victory came on soft ground at Carlisle back in June. He followed that up by finishing second off this mark at the same track next time and another big run could be on the cards.
