We are absolutely spoilt for choice on the racing front on Friday, with eight meetings taking place across Britain and Ireland. Some of the more intriguing angles include Charlie Appleby’s impressive record at Newmarket, an Enda Bolger runner to follow at Killarney and the race of the day from Hamilton. Take a look at our free tips page for daily content across British and Irish racing.
Newmarket’s July Course has always been kind to local trainer Charlie Appleby and he returned to form with several winners at the July festival last week. He is set to send three runners there on Friday, two of which run in the same race, so we’ve assessed his two best chances.
Gracious Gift was a good second on debut at Yarmouth but jockey bookings suggest that Graceful Song is the more fancied runner here. The daughter of Dubawi is a typically well bred Godolphin filly and with Billy Loughnane on board, she’s expected to make her presence felt on debut.
Cerro Blanco was a comfortable winner on the Rowley Mile on debut and was far from disgraced when runner-up in a Listed contest last time out. This race looks a lot easier and it’ll be a surprise if the three-year-old doesn’t return to winning ways on this occasion.
Enda Bolger is the Cross Country king but he has plenty of winners in conventional races too. His record at Killarney so far this season is 75 per cent, with three winners from four runners.
Tippin And Tappin won back-to-back starts under rules last term and remains unexposed in handicap chases. He was entitled to need the run over hurdles last time and the return to fences and the step back up in trip should see the seven-year-old to best effect.
Hamilton’s feature race is the £80,000 Listed Glasgow Stakes and a field of six has been declared. None of the runners have three-figure ratings so it should be very competitive. Me Colonel has the highest rating and he was third behind Irish Derby winner Benvenuto Cellini in the Chester Vase.
John & Thady Gosden are in great form of late and they will be represented by the unexposed Superior Choice, who won a novice under a penalty when last seen. Prizeland bolted up in a Lingfield novice on seasonal debut but the form of her second in the Lingfield Oaks Trial hasn’t worked out well.
Flawless Fusion and Folk Pageant are hard to fancy at this sort of level but don’t rule out James Fanshawe’s Plaid, who bolted up in handicap company here back in May.
