577-1 ITV soft ground outsiders each-way double for Sunday

Celcius ridden by Andrea Atzini winning at Haydock

Heavy rain has made Haydock a real test again on soft ground ahead of Sunday’s ITV Racing card. The second in the Sky Bet Sunday series, conditions have taken a real turn for the worse. Those who have smart prior form are likely to come to the fore so we’ve dug through the cards to find a pair who have plenty of soft ground form.

As well as Haydock there is also racing from the Curragh where the feature is the Group 1 Phoenix Stakes. Our free horse racing tips for Sunday are completed by Windsor, Leicester and Downpatrick.

3.55 Haydock – Sky Bet Sunday Apprentice Training Series Handicap

Wrenthorpe improves as the season goes on, doing the majority of his winning on soft ground in the autumn. That soft ground has come early for him this year and these conditions are exactly what he wants to show the best of his form.

Fifteen runs on good to soft or worse in his career have yielded four wins and six places so this is going to be perfect for him. He is back to a mark just two pounds above his last win which saw him produce an RPR of 93. With a five-pound claimer in the plate reducing his burden, a repeat of that would see him more than capable from this mark.

4.25 Haydock – Sky Bet Sunday Series Sprint Handicap

Ever since he was a juvenile, John Kirkup has shown an affinity for soft ground. Eight wins and seven places in twenty-six starts on ground that is good to soft or worse, the prevailing conditions are going to show him in the best light.

He scored from a career-high mark at Ayr a couple of starts back so he has a little more on his plate here but these conditions are going to be a big plus. Two wins and a place in four runs on heavy suggest he won’t mind if conditions get even worse.

Form at this track of 3312 in the past suggests that a double figure price is too big for him even from this inflated mark at a track that has seen him perform to a smart level in the past.
