2 Cheltenham Festival contenders to watch out for this weekend

There’s plenty of exciting racing to watch out for this weekend on both sides of the Irish Sea! Sandown hosts the Grade 1 Tingle Creek. There’s top-class action on Sunday at Punchestown too, with the John Durkan Chase shaping into a race of the year season contender.

We’ll have horse racing tips for all the action, but we’ll be focusing on the horses who are Festival bound. We’ve picked out two horses who could win this weekend and subsequently head to the Festival in March.

Many Clouds Chase

Santini will make his seasonal reappearance at Aintree on Sunday, with aspirations of a Gold Cup firmly on Nicky Henderson’s mind. He’s gone down narrowly in two races at the Festival, the 2019 RSA and last season’s Gold Cup, where he arrived just a neck too late.

He has the scope for a huge season in 2020/21, as it’s easy to forget he’s only raced six times over fences thus far. The Many Clouds Chase should be set up to suit, with Frodon and Native River likely to lock horns at the front. It’ll give him the ideal tow into the race and he should pounce late under Jeremiah McGrath for victory.

John Durkan Chase

A Grade 1 over the 2m 4f distance, the John Durkan is shaping up to be a cracker. There are superstars wherever you turn, including Samcro and Chris’s Dream. This race will shakeup the Ryanair market, however, with the two early favourites Allaho and Min locking horns.

The former went very close in the RSA at last year’s Festival, giving best in the dying strides. A drop back in distance could well suit Willie Mullins charge and we’ll learn plenty about him on Sunday.

Everyone knows what Min is capable of. A Grade 1 winner by twenty lengths at Aintree in 2019, he won over the Ryanair course and distance when last seen in March. Stamina has become less and less of a problem for him and the fact he reappears over this trip likely says plenty about Mullins’ aspirations for him this term.

Speaking of the aforementioned Chris’s Dream, he holds the fitness edge over those two rivals and also has a prominent sit in the Ryanair market. He was beaten a neck in the Grade 1 Champion Chase over three miles on return and could suit this 2m 4f test. He’s likely to set the pace and with plenty of stamina under the hood, they’ll have a big task to get past.
