3.55pm Southwell Tips & Betting Preview 18/04/2017

A field of seven go to post for the forth race of the day at Southwell on Tuesdya, see our betting tips and the full race preview below.

IN SUMMARY: Red Touch will be suited by the return to seven furlongs and Robero is interesting for a new yard, but they’ll do very well to stop CUSTARD THE DRAGON taking another C&D victory for John Mackie. He is a four time winner over C&D and has shown no signs of his improvement stopping, running on strongly to land the spoils and gain his forth C&D win two weeks ago. Ben Curtis retains the ride and he’s perfectly placed in stall one for another big run, so should be gaining his fifth win at his beloved Southwell today.

1 CUSTARD THE DRAGON – Four time C&D winner whose being climbing up the weights, but improving sufficiently to continue shrugging it off. He took another victory over C&D on his latest start when mowing down Call Out Loud in the final 100 yards, with those two five lengths clear of the remainder. He seemed to have a little bit in hand on that occasion and he’s only been raised 3lb, which should not be able to stop him from going in again over this C&D he loves so dearly.

2 INTENSICAL – Six year old who is suited by the seven furlong trip and has been running well on the polytrack of late, finishing a close second over this trip at Chelmsford three starts ago in March. He’s run well subsequently at the mile and 1m 2f trips, finishing close up on both occasions and he should be much happier back down in trip for Ivan Furtado. A mark of 77 gives him a chance and if taking to the fibresand he has to have decent each way claims under David Nolan.

3 AMONG ANGELS – Usually runs well over this C&D, taking victory over this C&D at Southwell in February off a 2lb lower mark. He’s been beaten the last twice here over the mile and six furlong trips and although he should be happier at this distance, his current form does leave him with a question mark. He should be on the premises under Robert Winston but others make more appeal on this occasion.

4 RED TOUCH – C&D winner back in  March 2016 and he followed up here over the mile trip six days later with a comfortable success of a 2lb lower mark than today’s. He has been running well of late without managing to win, last seen finishing second over here over the six furlong trip three weeks ago. He should be happier back up in trip and he isn’t necessarily badly weighted for a big effort under 3lb claimer Alistair Rawlinson. Each way claims.

5 ROBERO – Last seen 235 days ago which is cause for concern but he’s a winner on the tapeta and has gone close off this mark in the past. He was last seen at Thirsk in August when going close over today’s trip in second, narrowly denied by half a length off today’s mark. If back at his best he’d certainly have an each way chance under 3lb claimer Nathan Evans and the switch to the Michael Easterby yard may well prompt some improvement. Interesting.

6 JAY KAY – Eight year old who was a previous C&D winner, but hasn’t been seen on the artificial surfaces since November 2014 here when well beaten off a much lower mark than today’s. The break isn’t much of a concern and he won first time out in 2015, though he was struggling to land a blow off today’s mark towards the back end of last season. Has some question marks to answer and others look to have far more solid claims.

7 ORDER OF SERVICE – Seven year old who has seen a lot of racing over the years, but has been running well of late on the all weather. He was headed late on when second over the mile trip here last month and he again weakening out of things when third over the same C&D 20 days ago. Seven furlongs has been too sharp for him in the past which is of concern but he seems to run well here in the main so does have possibilities if at his best. Now 3lb below his last winning mark and Charlie Bennett takes off a useful 5lb, so he shouldn’t be dismissed.
