Sunday’s angles: Liam’s Royal Ascot best bet, race of the day and a key trainer stat

Royal Ascot kicks off on Tuesday and the racing community is well set for five days of world-class racing, full of international flavour. There’s plenty going on before that however so we’ve selected some key angles from Sunday’s racing and Liam Bramall is expecting a huge run from one horse in particular at Ascot next week. Race of the day: Munster Oaks

The Group 3 Munster Oaks has attracted a field of 10 and whilst there’s no real standout mare to side with, it looks like an interesting and thoroughly competitive affair. Surprisingly it’s one group race in Ireland in which Aidan O’Brien hasn’t dominated in recent years.

The master of Ballydoyle has won it three times in the last decade but has drawn a blank since 2020. Paddy Twomey has made the race his own recently, winning two of the last three renewals, and he is represented by Bosphorus Rose, although she has a bit to find at this sort of level.

Jim Bolger’s unbeaten three-year-old Sparan Nua is of obvious interest and Joseph O’Brien’s Nyra was last seen finishing fourth in a Listed race at the Curragh. Aidan O’Brien runs two and the form of Bloom‘s third behind Thundering On at Navan looks like an excellent piece of form now.

James Owen is the trainer to follow at Salisbury

James Owen is an excellent dual-purpose trainer and he has a very impressive strike-rate of 57 per cent at Salisbury so far this season, with four winners from just seven runners. He is represented by Suhub and there could be more to come from her, having finished second on stable debut at Wolverhampton earlier this month. Improvement seems likely to so don’t rule her out.

Liam’s Royal Ascot best bet

Great Barrier Reef (6/1, bet365) has been usurped by stablemate Confucius in the betting for the Coventry Stakes on Day 1 but his impressive display on debut is hard to forget. Unbeaten in two starts, he looks like a very powerful colt and there could be even more to come.

The son of No Nay Never pulverised his rivals when scoring by six lengths on debut at the Curragh and followed up in the Marble Hill Stakes. Stablemate Carry The Flag was second in the Marble Hill and is favourite for the Norfolk, suggesting that the form is expected lead the way in the juvenile department.
