‘There’s limitless scope for improvement’ – Four handicap debutants on Tuesday

Not all horses can be Group 1 performers and the majority end up in handicaps at various levels. The switch to handicaps can make a huge difference, as there’s almost limitless scope for improvement. With this in mind, we’ve picked four horses running on Tuesday that are very lightly raced and are set to make their handicap debuts. 2.25 Lingfield

Lilac Wine showed very little in two starts over 7f but there were some more positive signs when sixth behind an impressive winner at Goodwood last time. George Baker’s filly will need to improve but handicap will help and the step up in trip is likely to be a positive, as there’s loads of stamina in her pedigree.

3.55 Lingfield

Redditizio runs in a nursery and she finished third om debut at Wolverhampton, albeit by a very wide margin. Two fairly reasonable fifth-place finishes then followed and an opening mark of 48 looks workable. Trainer John Moore has had a couple of winners in the last fortnight and this daughter of Profitable might appreciate the extra furlong.

4.10 Pontefract

Cloaks Of Gold represents the Richard Hannon yard and she was a three-length third on debut at Salisbury in May. She was no match for the first two at Kempton after that and suffered another heavy defeat at the hands of Favourite Memory when last seen. Her pedigree suggests winning a 0-70 handicap shouldn’t be an insurmountable challenge.

4.40 Pontefract

Uppercase finished third behind Amiloc on debut and that horse went on to win the King Edward VII Stakes at Royal Ascot. Harry Eustace’s gelding kept on well to finish third again at Wolverhampton after that and the step up to a mile is likely to suit. Progress seems likely now handicapping and 72 could prove to be a generous opening mark.
