‘Forget good ground form’ – Three horses that will thrive in the mud at Fairyhouse

Conditions are set to be very testing at Fairyhouse on Wednesday and the hurdles course is particularly heavy. This means you’ll want to forget good ground form and we have three horses with proven heavy ground form to follow. These include a two-time heavy ground winner for Brendan Walsh that appears to have a huge advantage. Check out our free tips page for daily content across British and Irish racing.

Rochestown returned to winning ways on heavy ground over hurdles at Tramore last time out. The handicapper responded with a 10lb rise, which doesn’t look unreasonable after that very comfortable success. Brendan Walsh’s 10-year-old also scored on his last start over fences back in April so there’s nothing to fear upon his return to this sphere. His two heavy ground successes have come by a combined margin of 17 lengths, which suggests he could have a big advantage.

Any Second Now is certainly getting on a bit but the 13-year-old has won three times on heavy ground in the past. Last seen finishing a valiant second in the Irish Grand National, one would imagine that is the target again this year. Ted Walsh’s veteran was last victorious in the Grade 2 Webster Cup Chase at Navan in March 2023 and you wouldn’t want to rule out a big run here.

3.55 Fairyhouse

Lilian Bland is the only runner in the field with a previous win on heavy ground to her name. That success came at Thurles back in March and she’s well treated over hurdles on that evidence. Her narrow second at Tramore in November was a valiant effort and if producing a similar performance here, a return to winning ways could be on the agenda.
