The first bit of bad news for us punters is that just the one winning favourite has taken this event in the past decade, with winners at odds of up to 33/1 (three times), and only trainer Roger Teal managing to double up in that time. Luckily for us, we can start our race preview with the same trainer as he has Jack Of Diamonds (50/1) engaged for 2016. Now a seven-year-old, the son of Red Clubs looks a bit out of touch at first glance, but he has won seven races in total including six over this sort of trip and six on an all-weather surface including one here, and only has to carry two pounds more than his last victory this afternoon so may not be quite as far out of this as it at first appears.

Much as we respect Jack Of Diamonds he is not our selection here and we prefer the each way chances of Sirius Prospect (14/1 Each Way) who looks a spot of value here. Last time out he was third to Dommersen and Afjaan beaten a head and two lengths at the line but is seven pounds and five pounds better off so ought to be able to turn that around yet he is available at a much bigger price and having already won off marks as high as 105 in the past he can easily carry 95 to success this afternoon with Robert Winston doing the steering.

With so few last time out winners in the field they deserve a special mention starting with John Gosden’s Dommersen (3/1), an improving three-year-old who looks to have a pretty decent chance. Six career starts so far have seen three wins for an impressive 50% win strike rate, plus a couple of seconds so he is no mug, with a head win from Afjaan over course and distance last time out two weeks or so ago. The front two had the rest string out behind them that day and the runner up is no mug, and we do like the way he fought when challenged to keep in the front all the way to the line, adding courage to his other attributes he so obviously has.

Interestingly, William Haggas seems quite happy to allow Afjaan (11/2) to take on his conqueror here on two pounds better terms for a head and it ought to be pretty close between the pair of them this afternoon. A son of Henrythenavigator, he has only had the three races this season starting with a second to Red Box at Lingfield and as they have always felt he was a bit better than a handicapper he needs to be included in any forecasts at the very least.

Trainer William Jarvis is one of racing’s nice guys, and he has booked Championship chasing jockey Silvestre De Sousa to ride Wimpole Hall (10/1) as he looks to follow up his comfortable Sandown victory last time out. First tine cheek pieces seemed to make all the difference as he made all and never saw another horse, though whether they will give him as much slack this time is a moot point as is the additional six pounds the improving three-year-old is forced to carry this afternoon in a much better race.
