How Good Was Mums Tipple’s York Performance?

What a week. From Enable’s emotional send-off to Battaash’s brilliance, the Ebor Festival certainly delivered. The performance that got racing fans talking though, was that of Mums Tipple – who produced an awe-inspiring display to land the Goffs UK Premier Yearling Stakes.

Giving weight all round, on just the second start of his career, Richard Hannon’s Footstepsinthesand colt sluiced up by eleven lengths – the furthest a horse has won at the Ebor Festival since Quiff landed the Yorkshire Oaks by the same margin back in 2004.

How Strong Is The Form?

Ok, this wasn’t a Group race, but the runner-up on Thursday, Rayong, is officially rated 98 and Mums Tipple gave him five pounds. Whilst the third, Klopp Of The Kop chased home subsequent Chesham third Highland Chief on debut.

It is also worth noting that Mums Tipple’s debut win at Ascot has worked out exceptionally well – with the second, fourth and fifth-placed horses all coming out and winning since. Including Molatham, who landed a maiden at the Ebor Meeting on Friday.

Having made all of the running on both occasions, it will be fascinating to see how Mums Tipple gets on when unable to dominate.

How Do The Figures Stack Up?

Mums Tipple gained an RPR of 119 for his York win, which has only been beaten by Pinatubo (121) so far this season.

As reported in the Racing Post last week, in non-Pattern company only two juveniles in the past fifteen years have posted an RPR of 114 or higher, with those being Frankel (115) and Tiggy Wiggy (117).

The time posted by Mums Tipple also augurs well, with his 1m 9.32s speed quicker than his stablemate Threat recorded over the same course and distance in the Group 2 Gimcrack.

The win produced a Topspeed figure of 110, which is rated higher than the unbeaten Earthlight’s impressive Group 1 Prix Morny success (105).

Where Is He Being Aimed?

Most firms cut Mums Tipple to a general 12/1 for the 2000 Guineas after his win, and trainer Richard Hannon seems keen to aim him at the Newmarket classic.

There is stamina on the dam’s side of his pedigree, which suggests that the trip could be within reach, with dam Colomone Cross a half-sister to mile winners Mombassa, Gwaihir and Venetian View.

If a mile proves beyond him however, the Commonwealth Cup comes firmly into the picture, and the 10/1 on offer with William Hill for that race does attract some appeal.

In the immediate future, Group races such as the Mill Reef and Middle Park were nominated as potential targets by connections – whilst other York winners futures are mapped out in our four horses to take out of the Ebor Festival article.
