Tips for Roscommon Races

Roscommon Racecourse is situated in central Ireland, about 80 miles west of Dublin. It boasts both flat and jump racing for a short summer season that yields just nine fixtures on Mondays and Tuesdays, eight of which are evening cards. There are often big crowds at their cards. Money is steadily being reinvested into the track with facilities being upgraded. However, the yard still has a country track atmosphere.

Course: The jumps track is nearly 10 furlongs in circumference, the track has sharp bends with a run in of over 3 furlongs and a slight climb to the winning post. It is considered a very fair track with a slight bias towards those who race close to the pace, due to the sharp bends. However, there aren’t too many hard luck stories, with jockeys afforded plenty of time to adopt a position from all starts. There are six obstacles on each circuit, with very fair Easyfix fences in use on the chase course.

7f is the shortest distance raced over on the flat with no separate sprint course like so many tracks.  It is a track relatively sharp in nature and with the bends also on the sharp side, those who like to race close to the pace tend to be favoured.

Draw Bias: With few races taking place per year at Roscommon racecourse, it can be difficult to establish a draw bias. However, there appears to be a slight bias towards those drawn low. But with a good run from the home turn, a wider draw doesn’t appear to give a huge disadvantage, especially over a longer trip. Over 7 furlongs they have the entire length of the back straight to adopt a position. Therefore, even in a big field, the advantage of a low draw is only slight.

Betting Trends: Races at Roscommon have recently become well known as the canvas on which Charles Byrnes painted his summer plot. All three of his horses won in a coup that cost the bookmaking industry an estimated €5 million. Ger Lyons is the trainer to follow on the flat, with a 24% strike rate over the last five years for a +£36.79 level stakes profit. Favourites often struggle at Roscommon racecourse, especially in jumps handicaps where they have less than a 19% strike rate.
