1000 Guineas Trends 2016

The first fillies Classic of the year is no longer the first overall of the season, moved to the Sunday, the day after the 2000 Guineas a number of years back.  It still is however, a fascinating race as we find out what fillies have trained on over the winter and which having looked smart as juveniles are going to make an even bigger impact this season.

Let’s go through some key trends to try and help solve the puzzle!

  • Aiden O’Brien‘s exceptional 2000 Guineas record doesn’t translate to the 1000.  One winner in the last decade with three placed from 16 runners is a record that ante post favourite Minding will be looking to overcome.
  • Favourites has won 3 of the last 10 renewals but there have also been 3 at 16/1+ (Jacqueline Quest first past the post in 2010 was 66/1 when disqualified and would have made it 4/10)
  • French raiders have a good recent record with 3 winners from 8 runners in the last 10 years!
  • Jim Bolger has had a winner and 3 placed horses from just 6 runners so a runner from Coolcullen deserves plenty of respect.
  • 9/10 have won at least 2 races so one race winners face an uphill task.
  • Galileo is yet to sire the winner of the race but 5 of his 9 offspring have been placed.  Favourite Minding and 3rd favourite Ballydoyle are both progeny of Galileo.
  • Backers of First Victory will be hoping that Saeed bin Suroor can put a dismal record of a single placed horse from 9 runners in the past decade behind him.
  • The Rockfel (won by Promising Run in 2015) has been the best recent trial with 2 winners and 3 placed horses from the last 9 who attempted the double.
  • The May Hill is a sound trial with 4 winners there getting placed in the 1000 Guineas from 8 who have run.  Turret Rocks won the contest last year for Jim Bolger.
