3.10pm York Tips & Betting Preview 04/09/2016

Nine runners have been declared for the Listed sprint on Sunday’s York card. Our betting tips identify a good-value each-way selection against the warm favourite. Read on for the full race preview.

IN SUMMARY: The class act in this line-up is Danzeno, who is readily excused his defeat over 5f in the Nunthorpe here last month and will be too good for this field if somewhere near his best 6f form. However, there could be some each-way value in GOLDEN AMBER, who hasn’t really got her season off the ground yet but shaped as though she might be coming to hand when running quite well over 7f on Polytrack last month and will be competitive if matching the form of her Newmarket handicap win just under a year ago. Lord Of The Land has run with credit in Group 3 sprints on his last three appearances and is expected to give another good account here. This is a significant rise in class for Solar Flair but he seems to be making progress.

1 Clear Spring – Has a point to prove after running very poorly in a Windsor handicap last month but something must have been amiss that day and he’d been progressive/in good form beforehand; has a bit to find on the figures with some of these but can get competitive if back on song.

2 Danzeno – Never really got involved in the Nunthorpe over 5f here last month but is in calmer waters today and is probably better suited by 6f; will be very hard to beat in this company if matching the form of his third in the Group 2 Duke Of York Stakes over C&D in May and won’t mind if there’s some underfoot ease.

3 George Dryden – Very useful handicapper who wasn’t beaten far when fifth in the Great St Wilfrid at Ripon (6f, good) last month; needs to find something extra to make his mark at this level but scored in good style over C&D a year ago and can cope with rain-softened ground.

4 Lord Of The Land – Spent most of his career racing over longer trips but comes here after three very respectable runs in Group 3 sprints this summer, the latest when close third at Deauville (6f, good); will be favoured by any ease in the ground and is expected to make his presence felt again.

5 Nameitwhatyoulike – 7yo who has been in the form of his life this season and comes here after making all to gain a narrow-margin success in the Great St Wilfrid at Ripon (6f, good) last month; it’s hard to knock him after that performance but it still leaves him with a bit to find here.

6 Solar Flair – Won Class 3 handicap at Newmarket (6f, good) in a first-time hood in July and didn’t get the best of runs when close second in a similar race back there last month; this race is quite a bit tougher but he’s evidently heading in the right direction and has an each-way shout.

7 Scrutineer – Made pleasing seasonal debut when second in the European Free Handicap (Listed) at Newmarket (7f, good to soft) in April but is yet to build on that performance; stayed on for very respectable fourth at Chester (6f, good) on latest outing in July but others appeal more.

8 Golden Amber – Produced new career-best performance to win good-quality Newmarket handicap (6f, good to soft) just under a year; hasn’t hit the same heights during fairly light campaign this season but didn’t run badly over 7f on Polytrack last time and, with the forecast rain in her favour, she’s not out of this.

9 Marsh Hawk – Runner-up in a fillies’ Listed race at Nottingham (6f, good to firm) in May and a similar performance would put her in the mix here but it’s nearly two years since her last win and she finished last of seven at Chester on her latest outing five weeks ago.
