Wednesday’s racing: Long distance traveller, stat of the day and an Irish Guineas tip

We have another big weekend ahead of us, with some more Royal Ascot trials at Haydock and Classic action in Ireland, but there’s plenty of racing to look forward to before that. There are six meetings taking place across Britain and Ireland so we’ve picked out some of the key angles. Roger Varian sends one runner up to Ayr, a standout statistic from the Scottish track and Liam Bramall has picked out an ante-post Irish 2000 Guineas tip. Check out our free tips page for daily content across British and Irish racing.

Roger Varian sends one a 718-mile round trip

It’s not a short journey from HQ in Newmarket up to Ayr and Roger Varian is sending just one runner on the 718-mile round trip on Wednesday. Return To Unit has only had three starts so far and is set to make his handicap debut in the Tennent’s Lager Handicap at 3.42.

Varian has landed four winners from his 13 runners there in the last five seasons, giving him a very healthy strike-rate of 31 per cent. This will be his first Ayr runner of the current season and there are plenty of reasons to be confident of a big run.

He got off the mark when winning a maiden at Nottingham on his most recent start and the switch to handicaps can facilitate further improvement.

Stat of the day

Karl Burke is unbeaten at Ayr so far this season, as his only previous runner managed to get the job done. He will be represented by Ruler’s Pride in the opening maiden and expectations will be high. The son of Mehmas was purchased for 550,000 guineas and is a distant relative of Prix Morny and Commonwealth Cup winner Campanelle. It’s not a deep maiden and victory could be on the cards.

Irish 2000 Guineas tip

Alparslan (8/1, bet365) has probably not been given the respect he deserves for winning the Greenham Stakes at the expense of Group 1 winner Zavateri. Aidan O’Brien has won it just once in the last five years and Karl Burke’s colt should give Gstaad a run for his money. Provided the ground isn’t too quick, it would be unwise to rule out a big run from this son of Dandy Man.
