We analyse the chances of Wesley Ward’s seven Royal Ascot runners

The Kentucky-based trainer Wesley Ward has always traditionally targeted Royal Ascot religiously and we will go through the chances of his seven-thronged raid in more detail below…

Sheriff Bianco

Windsor Castle Stakes (Wednesday)

Two-year-old colt owned by Qatar Racing who caught the eye on debut to finish second at Churchill from an impossible draw in Stall 11, caught wide throughout. We should see him in a much better light here with Oisín Murphy aboard.

Sunshine City

Windsor Castle Stakes (Wednesday)

Wesley has won this race twice so it’s no surprise to see him throw two darts at it this year. This horse is bred for turf and will be seen to much better effect on it. Frankie Dettori is booked for the ride which is a sign of intent in itself.

Flying Aletha

Albany Stakes (Friday)

Impressive looking filly who beat a smart stablemate of hers called Lime by more than five lengths on debut and she is another who should improve for the switch to turf. This girl could be a star in the making.

Golden Pal

Norfolk Stakes (Friday)

Touted to be his best chance of the week, Wesley is very excited about this runner. Runner-up on debut at Gulfstream on dirt, Ward thinks he will come alive on the turf. “He loves the grass. He could be my best shot.” Frankie Dettori takes the ride.

Kimari

Commonwealth Cup (Friday)

Just touched off by Raffle Prize in the Queen Mary last season, Kimari returns for a go at the Commonwealth Cup. The solid course form should stand her in great stead and she looks likely to be in the thick of it come the business end.

Campanelle

Queen Mary Stakes (Saturday)

Beat her red-hot stablemate Royal Approval on debut which did surprise Wesley so he decided he had to let her take her chance in the race along with the aforementioned runner.

Royal Approval

Queen Mary Stakes (Saturday)

Wesley thinks that this filly is a better horse than Campanelle but he is willing to let the pair do battle once again to see if that is correct or not. This is a competitive contest this year but they are two exciting fillies.
