3.10 Leopardstown

Dermot Anthony McLoughlin saddles two in this race so it has to be interesting that a flurry of money has come for the outsider of the pair. Or well, the outsider on paper anyway. Peckham Springs certainly doesn’t have recent form figures than could inspire a bet but that is why he was 50-1 in the first place. That 50-1 is now as short at 9-1 with William Hill but you can still get 20-1 with bet365. How long that will last is anyone’s guess.

Peckham Springs unseated rider at Gowran Park last month over 2m4f but his sole victory came over two miles so it is encouraging that he is back over that distance today. That sole win came in a maiden hurdle at Fairyhouse in December 2020 on heavy ground. The ground won’t be that sticky today so one would wonder if he could get a tad outpaced on fresher ground.

Nonetheless, with the weight of money on the horse this morning, someone out there is happy to have a bet. He was only beaten six lengths when fifth of 16 in a Navan handicap off a rating of 111 in November. Now running from 2lb lower, the handicapper has certainly given him a chance and the rider’s claim takes off another 2lb.
