It’s fair to say that Aidan O’Brien can be considered as the master of Chester in reference to the Classic trials which take place there. In the last nine renewals of both the Chester Vase and the Dee Stakes, O’Brien has won six of each. That is a phenomenal record especially when you add in the three Cheshire Oaks-winners which he has trained in that time.
With this in mind, it’s surely hard to ignore his runners in both the Chester Vase and The Cheshire Oaks on Wednesday. The double looks like a decent price at 41-1 and it would take a brave person to bet against the Ballydoyle maestro claiming victory in two races which he clearly targets. Thoughts Of June (15-2, bet365) should improve massively for her seasonal debut at Leopardstown as O’Brien’s always do at this time of year. The form of that race is working out really nicely with the third and fifth both winning subsequently. She’s a regally bred filly out of a Grade 1 winning mare in the US and by the late great Galileo. As she’s bred to do the job, a big run should be expected here.
Changingoftheguard (4-1, bet365) did it in fine style when winning his maiden at Dundalk last month. The winning margin was six lengths and the runner-up was narrowly beaten next time out when filling out second spot again. This son of Galileo should appreciate the step up in trip and it’s likely that there’s more to come from him.
