French raider alert

Francis-Henri Graffard sends the 117-rated Sahlan for the Lockinge Stakes and the four-year-old won the Group 1 Prix de Moulin at the expense of Rosallion back in September. A fair fifth in the Breeders’ Cup after that, he’s entitled to be in the mix and this isn’t the strongest renewal.

Lockinge trends

John & Thady Gosden have won three of the last five renewals and they are represented by Damysus, who heads the market at the time of writing. The progressive four-year-old was a very impressive winner of a Group 3 over 1m1f at Newmarket on seasonal debut.

Seven of the last nine winners were four-year-olds and that potentially doesn’t bode well for Notable SpeechMore ThunderCicero’s Gift and Dancing Gemini.

Eight of the last nine winners have been single-figure prices, which suggests that the well fancied runners such as Zeus OlympicosThe Lion In Winter and Damysus should come to the fore.

ITV Outsider

Dancing Gemini‘s has fallen off somewhat in his last few starts but the five-year-old brings some excellent form to the table. Roger Teal’s runner was beaten by a neck when second to Lead Artist in this very race last year and a similar performance would give him every chance of getting back on track.

Horses for courses

Wise Approach (5/1, Betfred) bolted up in a course and distance Listed race last term and his odds seem a little large in the Listed Carnarvon Stakes, especially as he was a Group 1 winner at two. Stable form is a bit of a concern but he should improve plenty for his reappearance run last time out.

Dark Tornado (22/1, bet365) won this very race last year and that is his sole run at Newmarket to date. Michael Wigham’s five-year-old remains lightly raced and a big run can’t be ruled out.
