Saturday Gamble Alert: 33-1 into 10-1 on a bumper debutant

Perth Racecourse

While the ITV Racing cameras are focussed on Newbury, Newmarket and Ripon today, it’s a race at Perth that has caught the eye. The final race is a bumper and an unraced one has been backed in from 33/1 to 10/1 biggest price with bet365 at time of writing. All other bookmakers are single figures with the support continuing to come.

Stone Picker is the horse in question, an unraced charge of Darragh Bourke’s. He has an outstanding pedigree for this yard, a half-brother to Grade 2 winner Imperial Aura as well as smart handicapper Pawn Star. With a pedigree like that, for a bigger named trainer, it’s fair to think that the early shows of 33/1 last night would not have been there.

Bourke does get the odd nice one in this sphere, a winner and five placed from just sixteen bumper runners over the last five years. The yard are not adverse to being part of a market move either. On the 7th of Feb this year, Fire Away who had recently left the yard for that of Laura Morgan was punted all rates down to evens when dotting up at Musselburgh.

That same day saw one for Bourke sent off 4/5 in the final race on the same card as the last leg of a treble that went down with that final runner. Blowing Dixie for Iain Jardine was the other heavily backed runner that Sunday, winning at Southwell at odds of 4/6.

A six-year-old bumper debutant who cost buttons may not look the most natural one to punt but coming form the Bourke yard, he has to go down as very interesting.
