Owen’s Outsiders: 50-1 and 25-1 Glorious Goodwood Day 4 tips

Owen's Outsiders

The penultimate day of action from Glorious Goodwood, the feature is the Group 2 King George Stakes. A five-furlong sprint, Battaash bids to win a remarkable fifth renewal of the race for Charlie Hills. There’s a strong cast of supporting races, including the Group 3 Glorious Stakes.

We’ll have horse racing tips for all five races live on ITV Racing, with the Golden Mile another of the fascinating races on show. For me, it’s another chance to try and find an outsider winner. I’ve found three horses who are set to out-run their prohibitive odds and you can find all the details below.

1.50 Goodwood – Unibet 3 Boosts A Day Goodwood Handicap

The blinkers have sparked a major revival of Gary Moore’s Kloud Gate (25-1) in recent starts over hurdles, winning two of his last three since being fitted with it. Both those successes came over 2m 4f, with 2m 7f proving a bridge too far on a galloping track at Worcester last time.

He competed in this race back in 2018, where he finished a well-held fifth after weakening late on. Judging by his hurdling form, stamina has become one of his strong suits since and he’s three pounds lower for this attempt.

Conditions have come into his favour and although he needs a career-best to be threatening in this line-up, this is his first flat run with the visor enlisted. At odds of 25-1, he looks to be severely overpriced under David Probert.

3.00 Goodwood – Unibet Golden Mile Handicap

With previous selection Variyann an absentee, I’ll go to my second choice of Corazon Espinado (50-1). Trained by the in-form Simon Dow, he was making his first turf start of 2021 when running them ragged at Epsom in June.

He’s a course specialist at that venue, but he put that field (including Hortzadar) firmly in its place with a dominant performance. Goodwood, another switchback track, will play to his strengths, and he sneaks in at the very bottom of the weights.

Granted, this is a career high mark that he needs to overcome on his 47th start, but he remains relatively unexposed over the mile. If Hollie can get into a handy position from a wider stall, I fancy him to keep on finding and he could easily sneak a place.

5.20 Goodwood – TDN Australia Handicap

He’s up in grade from his recent starts, but this race should play out to suit State Of Bliss (18-1). Somewhat of a cliff horse for me in recent months, he’s gone down narrowly in his two most recent starts over ten furlongs.

Beaten half a length at Ayr two starts ago, despite slipping on the bend, he was headed in the final stride at Nottingham last time. That was agonizing, but Goodwood should play to his strengths. Mark Johnston’s record at Glorious Goodwood needs no introduction and as a pace angle, he’ll be perfectly placed.

As previously mentioned, he’s up in grade, but he should be up to the test. He won’t be stopping when he’s challenged in the final furlongs and with Joe Fanning a master judge in terms of pace, I fancy him to hold on at lucrative odds.
