‘He would be the best-value outsider’ – John Gosden fancies 25-1 Guineas horse 🧐

John Gosden with Lady and Lord Lloyd Webber

The day every Flat racing enthusiast has been waiting for is nearly upon us. The 2,000 Guineas is the first classic of the season and it could be an absolute belter. Newmarket Racecourse will play host to the feature race on Saturday.

Godolphin seem to have the best chance on paper with the favourite and second favourite in the market. However, they haven’t won the race since 2013 and Pinatubo disappointed in this race when sent off a red hot favourite. Can they do it this time?

Aidan O’Brien has a pretty strong hand too with Derby favourite Luxembourg taking his chance. On fairly quick ground, this might not be enough of a test for him but it will be encouraging if he finishes his race off strongly.

Trainer John Gosden was asked who he liked in the Guineas and to the surprise of many, he picked out a 25-1 runner.

Who is this horse then?

Checkandchallenge is two from two and really caught the eye when scoring at Newcastle last time out. He beat some very good horse but it was the manner of his victory that was the most pleasing of all.

It is very hard to win a race when you are held up in rear if they go a crawl up front so the odds were against him from the off. However, the way he sliced through the field and the turn of foot he produced was electric.

He will be guaranteed a good pace to aim at in the Guineas so it could be set up nicely for him. This is what John Gosden had to say: “I think there’s one horse in there that’s an outsider, Checkandchallenge, who was very impressive [when winning at Newcastle]. He may be a bit green and has only had two runs in his life, but he would be the best-value outsider.”
