Irish Flat trainer Ken Condon has had a slowish start to the season with just one winner from his first 23 runners. That winner was Drombeg Banner who won a decent Cork handicap but he had a horse in Moss Tucker run a cracker in a large field handicap at the Curragh last week too. I certainly wouldn’t say he is on the cold list anyway.
Based in Rathbride in County Kildare, it has to be hugely interesting that he sends one runner all the way to Bath Racecourse on Thursday. I have delved through the books and it looks like he has never had a runner at this track, and he certainly has not in the last five years anyway. Let’s take a look at the horse in more detail.
Teresa Mendoza finished sixth in the Listed Cork Stakes on her return to the track earlier in the month and it was evident that she was not fully wound up. She has not lived up to her early promise but she is certainly good enough to land this Listed affair at Bath if she brings her best form to the table.
She was only beaten two lengths when third in a Group 3 at the Curragh on her second start last season and this is an easier assignment. Certainly ground versatile, she rounded off last season with a second to Power Under Me, who won that race she contested first time up this season. Ken Condon wouldn’t send her to Bath if he didn’t feel she had a big chance. He surely means business.
Interestingly, this will be the first time that the horse will be taking on the flying 5f but she is a strong traveller and it shouldn’t be an issue.
