Godolphin have never been afraid to splash the cash and they had an impressive winner on Monday that came with a €2 million price tag. They’re set to unleash another costly colt at Yarmouth on Thursday and there will be plenty of interested parties. Charlie Appleby trains the horse in question, who cost £1,470,000 (1,400,000 guineas), and anything other than victory would surely be considered as a disappointment. Silent Applause will face eight rivals in the British Stallion Studs EBF Novice Stakes and he’ll surely have every chance. Only one of his rivals has run before and that horse was a very well beaten 13th of 14 at Ascot on debut. Roger Varian’s Peel Park cost 350,000 guineas and it would be no surprise if he was to make the frame.
Dougie Costello is set to take the ride and it’s interesting that he fetched such a big price, as his pedigree doesn’t leap off the page. Two of his three siblings have won but not at a particularly high level and his dam was only rated 60 in her racing days. Connections must have been impressed by his breeze up performance and will hope he could be the real deal.
Trainer Charlie Appleby has been in very good recent form and is operating at a strike-rate of 39 per cent in the last fortnight. Seven winners from 18 runners is a very health return and it’s certainly a positive omen. It’s also worth noting that all three of Appleby’s runners at Yarmouth in 2025 have won, so he’s defending an unbeaten record.
