The opening French Classics of 2021 are this weekend at Longchamp, kicking off as always with the Guineas. It’s rather rare to see the Newmarket winners run here rather than going straight to the Curragh so that adds extra intrigue with Poetic Flare and Mother Earth both on the card.
The ground may not be entirely ideal for either of them with conditions very different to Newmarket. As such, we’ve had a look at a pair at double-figure odds for an each way double. There is also action at Naas, Ripon, Stratford and Wexford on Sunday for our horse racing tips.
2.50 Longchamp – Emirates Poule d’Essai des Poulains
The Prix de Fontainebleau could be the main French form guide to the 2000 Guineas, the first five home all meeting once more. Sealiway was runner-up on that occasion but the ground will have been quick enough for him. He won the Grand Criterium here in October over seven furlongs on heavy ground , tearing that Group 1 apart by seven lengths.
A trip to the Breeders’ Cup followed that where once more the ground will have been on the quick side for him. Good to soft is the order of the day here with more rain forecast which is going to suit him much better. Already a winner at the top level, he is overpriced at a double-figure price given the prevailing conditions.
3.25 Longchamp – Emirates Poule d’Essai Des Pouliches
Silvestri gets the call in the 1000 Guineas. She was one of a number in here who contested the Prix de la Grotte last time out, a Group 3 contest over course and distance. She was runner-up in that, beating all those who re-oppose her here. There were no hard luck stories so it’s hard to see why any of those should be able to reverse the form with her.
She was a bit keen in the early stages and as it was only the third race of her career, she didn’t pick up immediately when asked. When the penny did drop she came home well, producing another significant step forward. A stronger pace here will help her settle and softer ground will be no concern for her.
