3 trainers who are worth following at Royal Ascot

Newmarket-based trainer John Gosden

Tuesday sees the start of Royal Ascot 2020 and while it is anything but a normal meeting this year, there are still the winners to find. We are only two weeks back from lockdown but that has been plenty of time to figure out the yards in form and those not. In that vein, let’s look at three yards that it will be worth following at Royal Ascot this coming week.

John Gosden

49 winners to his credit so far at Royal Ascot, long odds on to get to the half century this week. His yard have started back from lockdown in flying form and with the likes of Stradivarius leading the team once more in 2020, it’s not hard to see the master of Clarehaven having another huge week.

His relationship with Frankie Dettori has produced dividends the last number of years and 2020 doesn’t look any different with the pair amongst the hottest duos since racing resumed at Newcastle on the 1st of June.

Andrew Balding

Just two Royal Ascot winners to his credit so far which might not make him the most likely of candidates for one to watch. That said, he arrives with his strongest looking team in 2020 as well as being a yard who are in red hot form.

He has seven horses priced at 11/1 or shorter in the first two days alone so this looks the year that he backs up the wins of Born In China and Dashing Willoughby with a much more considerable haul.

Wesley Ward

The American maestro has once more sent a team over to Royal Ascot in the pursuit of further glory. There are murmurs that his 2020 team might not have the same strength that some of his others have but his team has not had the same lockdown that the UK yards have had to deal with so might be further ahead than their European counterparts. They had to relocate from Kentucky to Florida but the training kept going.

He has been responsible for 10 winners so far at the meeting in his career, a target many English yards can only dream about. Three of those came in the Queen Mary and it’s that race that once more he would appear to hold his strongest chance in Campanelle.
