2024 Thyestes Chase preview, trends horse and outsider tip at Gowran Park

The field jump in the 2019 Thyestes Chase

Staged at Gowran Park Racecourse, the Thyestes Chase is a massive handicap run over a distance of 3m, and it should give us some clues with regard to the Grand National later in the season. Below, we will take a look at a preview, a trends pick and an outsider selection to monitor in the market. Make sure you check out out free horse racing tips on the website.

What horse do the trends point to?

Just to keep this very simple, some of the key trends to look at for this race are

  • Willie Mullins or Gordon Elliott have won five of the last six runnings
  • 22 of the last 24 winners have been Irish bred
  • Seven of the last nine winners have gone off a single digit price
  • A claimer hasn’t won the race since 2009

According to these trends, Dunboyne could the best option. The course winner lost out by a short head in this race last year behind Carefully Selected and is only 5lb higher in the weights now. He ran well for a long way when fourth in the Troytown on his return in November and this is the main plan all season for him.

What outsider looks overpriced?

With form figures at Gowran Park that read 122, Macs Charm could bounce back to form at a huge price for trainer Colm Murphy. This horse chased home the reopposing Ain’t That A Shame in a novice hurdle here last season, and will have a 3lb pull with that rival here despite that horse being way shorter in the betting. Pulled up twice so far this season, we haven’t seen his true running but a return to this track could revitalise him.
