‘His hurdles mark catches the eye’ – 33/1, 25/1 and 20/1 Punchestown outsiders

The Punchestown Festival continues on Thursday and there’s another intriguing eight-race card to look forward to. We’ve selected three outsiders that can outrun their substantial odds on Day 3. These include a fascinating handicap runner who makes his first start over hurdles for more than two years. Check out our free tips page for daily content across British and Irish racing.

4.15 Punchestown

Typical Thomas (33/1, William Hill) has been well suited by the switch to fences and he won at Downpatrick and Kilbeggan in August and September. It was a career best effort when an easy winner of a Listed race at Cork from out of the handicap after that. A 7lb rise looked fair enough and he acquitted himself reasonably well in two competitive races at Leopardstown. Now on a 1lb lower mark, he looks capable of outrunning these pretty substantial odds.

6.00 Punchestown

Lantry Lady (25/1, bet365) is a fascinating runner in the Champion Stayers Hurdle as she really could be anything and is very lightly raced. Henry de Bromhead’s mare has won two of her three starts and showed plenty of promise when winning her maiden at Gowran. Equally as impressive when scoring in a Grade 3 over the same course and distance next time, she looked a little outpaced behind Lossiemouth in the Mares’ Hurdle at Cheltenham. The step up in trip will suit on that evidence and she’s one to watch.

6.35 Punchestown

Churchstonewarrior (20/1, William Hill) is a strong stayer and he managed to get the better of the useful Mahler Mission in a Grade 2 novice chase at Navan in February 2023. It’s been a while since we’ve seen him over timber and that’s why his hurdle mark catches the eye. Rated 11lb lower in this sphere, his useful form as a novice suggests he’s capable of running a huge race.
