Our race preview takes a look at an interesting Handicap Chase at Cartmel. See our betting tips to uncover a horse who should have more to give over fences.
IN SUMMARY: Mountain Tunes could well be dangerous off of this mark over fences and Pena Dorada was also perked up latest when the cheekpieces returned. However, LOVE THE LEADER ran okay latest as a beaten favourite when possibly not appreciating the fitted blinkers. It’s still early days for him over fences and wont mind the softer ground, so it is taken he can improve enough to win for a 2nd time over fences.
1 MOUNTAIN TUNES – A horse many will be familiar with as it provided AP McCoy with his 4000th winner. He’s been very in and out since then, not taking to fences when he tried it in late 2015 and his last effort at Southwell over hurdles was very poor (24f, Good to Soft). Really will need to raise his game over these obstacles and although thats very possible, he is a risk we wont take today.
2 BLACK SAM THE MAN – Won at Kilbeggan recently (25f, Good) but then disappointed back at the same track when mid-pack and no excuses (25f, Good to Yielding). Current mark looks pretty tough compared to some of the other horses in this race, but a good showing wouldn’t be a surprise under the champion jockey.
3 LOVE THE LEADER – Didn’t perform too bad back over fences latest when the blinkers didn’t appear to really be helping (24f, Good) at Market Rasen. Has only been over fences 3 times and won on his chase debut back in October over a shorter trip at Sedgefield (19.5f, Good). Is quite a bit higher in the weights but has potential and this softer ground wont be an issue so he is taken to improve over these obstacles sufficiently to win.
4 MASTER RAJEEM – Won 3 starts back at this track over shorter (21f, Good to Soft), and its hard to see what he really achieved as it was only a field of 4. Hasn’t gone on since and posted his worst effort yet when 7th of 9 at Uttoxeter latest (24f, Good). Has had a break since and although he performs well at Sedgefield for the most part, he is passed over for today.
5 PENA DORADA – Improved for the return of cheekpieces when 3rd at Uttoxeter over 3m. Is the most experienced over fences and could well be on a handy mark based on past efforts, but since a claimer is up it might be possible connections believe he’s high enough in the weights at the moment. Should definitely be in the shake-up and would be dangerous to discount.
6 SCHINDLER’S PRINCE – Came up short going for the 4 timer when 10 lengths down on an easy winner at Bangor last week (24f, Good to Soft). Probably high enough in the weights and would much prefer the ground to dry out. Ben Poste takes off a handy 3lb’s but needs to find something more from this mark.
7 SUSSEX ROAD – 3 poor efforts so far over fences, latest when a very long 5th at Cartmel in July (25.5f, Good). Nothing to recommend off of bottom weight.
myracing Forecast Prices: 3/1 Black Sam The Man, 7/2 Pena Dorada, 4/1 Schindler’s Prince, 9/2 Love the Leader, 11/2 Mountain Tunes, 11/1 Master Rajeem, 66/1 Sussex Road
