It’s Bank Holiday Monday and there’s a high quality eight-race card on offer at the Curragh. The feature is the Mooresbridge Stakes which is a fascinating Group 2. What’s more interesting is the huge gamble which is under way in the Apprentice Handicap at 4.40. One runner has seen its price capitulate throughout the morning. Dixie Bluebell was available at 25-1 with bet365 last night and sustained market support has seen her price collapse further and further throughout the morning. The best price available at time of writing is almost a fifth of that price at 11-2 which is only available with three bookies (Paddy Power, Betfair and bet365). William Hill are the most threatened firm and are offering just 7-2. This a monster gamble and you wouldn’t want to rule out the prospect of her price decreasing further before the off.
The Jim Bolger-trained four-year-old is making her second start of the season having finished 16th of 17 at Leopardstown on her seasonal bow last month. Her form tailed off towards the end of last season so the form book suggests she has it all to do. Improvement can be expected as she should be sharper for that last time out effort but she needs to find a fair amount on the evidence of that run.
In her favour, she put in a decent effort off a 3lb higher mark in a Leopardstown handicap last summer. A repeat of that performance off this new lower rating could well put her in the mix. One thing is for sure, whatever the outcome is it’ll be an interesting watch.
