.30pm Goodwood Tips & Betting Preview 05/09/2017

A field of seven go to post for this 1m 2f maiden at Goodwood on Tuesday afternoon. See our betting tips and the full race preview below.

IN SUMMARY: Not the most inspiring of maidens, with the best form brought in by Red Royalist, but he’s failed to improve of late so preference is for PSYCHOTIC. There was plenty to like about his debut at Salisbury in August, keeping on well to finish fifth, getting the message late on after a tardy getaway. He can only improve for the experience and the step up in trip. He can improve past his main danger Ancient Longing who ran well on her second start in an above average maiden at Newbury, finishing fourth and he should be in the shake-up.

DANCE ROCK – Bought for 625,000gns as a yearling but was re-sold in November 2016 for just £13,000, making his belated flat debut at Bath in May. He ran with some promise to finish seventh that day, subsequently finishing second in two maiden hurdles the last twice. He certainly couldn’t be ruled out now that he returns to the flat, with connections in good form at present. One to consider for the placings at the very least.

PSYCHOTIC – 50,000gns as a yearling for David Menuisier who ran with promise on debut at Salisbury two weeks ago, slowly into stride before making late progress inside the final furlong. The penny really dropped late on for him and he should improve markedly for the step up in trip. Menuisier’s string tend to improve for their run and he looks the one to beat as he should improve past these.

FEARSOME – Son of Makfi who has shown promise on his first two runs for Ralph Beckett, improving on his debut third to finish in the same position at Windsor, with his slow start not helping his cause. He faded inside the final furlong which is disappointing to see and he needs more in this if he’s to be making an impact under Oisin Murphy. Ralph Beckett’s string remains in great form at present, but others are more convincing.

HATS OFF TO LARRY – Has finished third on all of his runs thus far for Mick Channon, with his latest third another slightly backwards step as he was well beaten in a modest looking race. That said, the second in that Chester race is a 107 rated hurdler, which indicates that he could do better in this sphere with time. Nonetheless, he looks like a handicap project and others make far more appeal on balance.

RED ROYALIST – Has the best form on offer for Marcus Tregoning, placing in some good races on his first three runs including a valuable Auction Stakes at Newmarket in October. He hasn’t, however, gone on from that the last twice, well beaten at both Wetherby and Newmarket which puts a damper on his claims. He had things all his own way on his latest start and still faded tamely, with connections relying on this step up in trip to suit. His pedigree gives little hope that he’ll stay though and he’s likely best watched again.

TIMELY ARRIVAL (NON RUNNER) Son of Cacique for Amanda Perrett who has a good middle distance pedigree but showed very little in a one mile Newmarket maiden last month. He chased the leaders until halfway where he was brushed aside when ridden, tailed off in 11th. He is surely capable of better and this step up in trip should suit. However, audiences should have seen more on debut and others are preferred on this occasion.

ANCIENT LONGING – Slowly away on debut at Salisbury for Roger Charlton, running with promise to finish fifth and she did improve to finish fourth at Newbury on her latest start, despite a heavy defeat. That looked like a useful maiden and this is an easier race, with a return to this trip in her favour. The better ground is a question mark, but if she does handle it she looks like a big danger under Kieran Shoemark.
