Wincanton Racecourse is located in Somerset and plays host to National Hunt racing only. The feature races at the track are a pair of two mile hurdles: the Elite in November and the Kingwell in February. In years past, both have often been used as a stepping stone to the Champion Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival.

Wincanton Betting Tips

A sharp right-handed rectangle, the nature of the course changes drastically with the going. On a quick surface it is a test of speed, with front runners generally favoured. The home straight runs slightly downhill and a swift kick off the turn often wins races. When the ground rides deeper in the winter, it becomes more of a stamina test. In the same vein as so many other flat tracks, races at Wincanton tend to be run at a good pace which plays into those with extra stamina reserves in the winter.

The ability to travel at pace makes the Champion Hurdle trials important, with many races outside of the Festival being more tactically run. Wincanton racecourse also gives a taste of races run closer to a Championship pace. The fences on the chase course are stiff in nature, presenting an excellent test for a novice. The three fences in the home straight come up close together, providing more than their share of incident as horses tire close to home. The key, however, is often the 4th last on the short side straight. A mistake here just before the swing into the straight is costly. Finally, the slight downhill run to the line means that is is often hard to regain lost ground.

Wincanton Betting Trends

Given the proximity to his yard, it is no surprise that Paul Nicholls is the leading trainer by a significant margin at Wincanton races. A 31% strike race with all runners has generated 66 winners in the last five years. NHF races are the most profitable, with a +£12.50 level stakes profit. A 20% strike rate over fences has generated a loss of -£34.95, a sizeable negative from the yards chasers.
