Which horses will be suited by testing ground at Uttoxeter on Saturday?

Chase The Spud After The Betfred Midlands National

The going at Uttoxeter Racecourse is heavy ahead of Saturday’s Midlands Grand National meeting. We’ve identified three likely types who might appreciate the give underfoot to get us back into the winner’s enclosure right after the Cheltenham Festival.

1.50 Uttoxeter

It has been arguably the best week trainer Dan Skelton has ever had, and with the yard in tremendous form, Santos Blue has to be of interest in this handicap hurdle on the card over 2m4f. This horse was a three-time winner during his novice campaign and relished heavy going when landing a Wetherby handicap over this trip in January, rallying in the closing stages. He had excuses when running a poor race on quicker ground at Ascot and is worth keeping onside back on heavy.

2.25 Uttoxeter

Despite having to carry the burden of top weight, Hititi has to be of interest in the bet365 Handicap Hurdle over the extended 2m7f. The gelding has never been outside of the top three in five starts on heavy going, and arrives here off the back of three solid seconds at Sandown, Plumpton and Exeter. Angus Cheleda’s 5lb claim means he’s effectively running off 3lb lower here and he has a good chance to hit the frame again.

3.35 Uttoxeter

Christopher Wood has shown a liking for heavy ground in the past and his price looks like a spot of value for trainer Venetia Williams. He ran very well when third in the Edinburgh National at Musselburgh in February, and only poor jumping was the reason for his below par run in the Eider Chase at Newcastle. The drop back down in trip should suit.
